A Prada-wearing devil shows up on this week’s SNL promo, and it’s not Meryl Streep or Anna Wintour.
Olivia Rodrigo is there though — she’s both the host and musical guest this week — but the devil is James Austin Johnson, out-Streeping Streep.
In the promo, Rodrigo arrives at Studio 8-H to be greeted by cast members Andrew Dismukes and Jane Wickline, who are all smiles until fellow cast member Tommy Brennan rushes in to warn, “Hey guys! He’s on his way!”
Panic ensues at the imminent arrival of Someone Big, and if you’re thinking Lorne Michaels, think again. Johnson barges in, wearing some sort of candy-apple-color fur coat and cooly issuing demands in a perfect, beat-for-beat take on Streep’s famous scene in the first The Devil Wears Prada. Where Streep’s Miranda Priestly casually filleted Anne Hathaway’s Andrea Sachs over the latter’s offhand comment about blue belts, Johnson goes off on Rodrigo’s use of the word “skits.”
“These skits?” replies the silver-bobbed Johnson. “I find it sort of comical that you think these ‘skits’ have nothing to do with you when in fact your entire career has been turned into sketches by the people in this very room.”
The skit, eh, sketch, gets a capper when Brennan returns to announce the arrival of an even bigger Someone Big.
Watch the promo above, but maybe first refresh your memory with the pertinent clip from the 2006 film below.
This will be Rodrigo’s first time as host and third time as musical guest. The Grammy winner’s new album, You Seem Pretty Sad For A Girl So In Love, drops June 12.
SNL airs live on NBC (11:30 p.m. ET/ 8:30 p.m. PT) and streams live on Peacock. It is produced in association with Broadway Video. The creator and executive producer is Lorne Michaels.
