EXCLUSIVE: German series The Flaws has been awarded the official competition award at this year’s Seriencamp Festival in Cologne.
ZDF’s show, which follows employees in a German government office who after a lucky mix-up are rerouted to an advanced training program, will be presented at the festival next month, with today’s announcement coming as Seriencamp reveals its full screening lineup.
Relationship dramedies are being placed center stage at Seriencamp with Disney+’s Alice and Steve, the big winner at Canneseries, screening alongside Prime Video’s German adaptation of Mexico’s Game of Keys from Maxton Hall producer UFA Fiction.
There is also HBO Max’s Braunschlag 1986, coming as Warner Bros. Discovery and HBO Max programming exec Anke Greifeneder is honored with the Deadline German TV Disruptor Award. A Spotlight: Female Voices series of shows will also screen such as the previously announced Westend Girl starring Golden Globe nominee Helena Zegel, ZDFneo’s Serial Cleaner and Escaping Bolivia.
The Flaws will be the big winner while ORF-ZDF’s Buried and Sheep have won the short-form award and the critics choice award will be selected at the event by a jury comprising Arabella Wintermayr, Patrick Heidmann and Dominik Porschen.
“Whether from Bangladesh or the United Kingdom, Germany or Austria, Palestine or Norway, the stories captivating us in this year’s series lineup speak many languages,” said program director Gerhard Maier. “And sometimes, as in The Flaws, physical expression almost entirely replaces dialogue – or, as in Sheep, sheep are given a voice to hilariously express their ignorance, brought to life by stars such as Jella Haase, Birgit Minichmayr, and Merlin Sandmeyer.”
Seriencamp runs June 9 to 11. It will be accompanied by the usual conference and a Plot Next strand focusing on AI and tech.
