‘The Survivors’ cast: All about the Australian stars of Netflix’s murder mystery (and where you’ve seen them before)

The Survivors is Netflix’s latest murder mystery that dives into grief, secrets, and unsettling truths.

Based on Jane Harper’s 2020 novel and created by Australian filmmaker Tony Ayres, Set in the fictional seaside village of Evelyn Bay, The Survivors centers on Kieran Elliott (Charlie Vickers), who returns home to help his aging parents 15 years after a tragic incident claimed the lives of three young people. But when a young woman is found dead, old wounds are reopened, and long-buried memories begin to haunt him.

The six-episode Netflix series premiered on June 6, showcasing Aussie talent like rising stars Vickers and Yerin Ha. Learn more about the actors (and where you might’ve seen them before) with Entertainment Weekly‘s Survivors cast and character guide.

Charlie Vickers is probably best recognized for his turn as Sauron in the Prime Video fantasy epic The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power (2022–present). He began acting professionally in 2018 after graduating from the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama. Since then, he’s landed roles in Medici (2018), as well as Palm Beach (2019), and The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart (2023).

Vickers plays Kieran Elliott, a man still grappling with the guilt and grief of his brother’s death as he returns to his hometown to take care of his parents.

Yerin Ha is a rising star who’s making a name for herself in Hollywood. She kicked off her career as Technie Jane in Reef Break (2019) and has been steadily building an impressive resume ever since. Her recent credits include Australian series like Troppo (2022) and Bad Behaviour (2023), as well as roles on Paramount+’s Halo (2022–2024) and Max’s Dune: Prophecy (2024). 

Next up, Ha takes center stage in season 4 of Bridgerton season 4 as Sophie Baek, the love interest of none other than Benedict Bridgerton (Luke Thompson).

Ha stars in The Survivors as Mia Chang, Kieran’s partner, who returns with him and their child to his hometown.

Shannon Berry as Bronte

Shannon Berry gained prominence for her breakout role as Dot Campbell on the Prime Video drama The Wilds (2020–2022). Since then, Berry has secured roles in High Country (2024), Fake (2024), Watson (2025), and the dark comedy film Winner (2024), based on the life of Reality Winner.

In her latest role, Berry plays Bronte, Olivia’s roommate and a photographer visiting Evelyn Bay to work on a project exploring the town’s unsettling series of accidents.

Robyn Malcolm as Verity Elliott

Robyn Malcolm, who has long been a fixture of New Zealand television, is known for her roles on the soap opera Shortland Street (1994–1999) and the cult favorite Outrageous Fortune (2005–2010). Like her on-screen son, Malcolm has also been part of The Lord of the Rings franchise, though she appeared in The Two Towers (2002).

Beyond screen roles, Malcolm is also a seasoned stage actor, appearing in productions of Twelfth Night (1989), The Importance of Being Earnest (1991), Much Ado About Nothing (1999), and The Good Person of Szechwan (2014).

Next, she’ll appear in the drama Pike River (2025), alongside Emmy nominee Melanie Lynskey and Lucy Lawless.

On The Survivors, Malcolm takes on the role of Verity Elliott, Kieran’s emotionally distant mother, who still blames him for the tragic death of his brother Finn.

Like most of his costars, Damien Garvey has spent much of his career in Australian productions. You may know him from McLeod’s Daughters (2001–2007), Sea Patrol (2007–2011), Rake (2012–2018), and The Artful Dodger (2023–present). He’s also popped up in several American projects, including Love and Monsters (2020), Nine Perfect Strangers (2021), and Joe vs. Carole (2022). Up next, he’ll star in the Australian dark comedy crime series, Deadloch (2025).

Garvey plays Brian Elliott, Kieran’s father. His dementia diagnosis is one of the key reasons why Kieran returns home.

Thom Green as Sean Gilroy

Thom Green has largely worked the small screen, with roles in the Australian series Dance Academy (2010–2012), Camp (2013), Ladies in Black (2024), and the Netflix limited series Apple Cider Vinegar (2025).

On The Survivors, Green plays Sean Gilroy, Kieran’s childhood friend and the only member of the Gilroy family who doesn’t believe Kieran is to blame for his brother Toby’s death in the storm.

Catherine McClements as Trish

Award-winning actress Catherine McClements is a familiar face to fans of Australian TV, thanks to her roles on Water Rats (1996–1999), Rush (2008–2011), Tangle (2009–2012), and Return to Paradise (2024–present). She’s also made her mark on Netflix with appearances on Pieces of Her (2022) and, like Green, Apple Cider Vinegar (2025). McClements is also a seasoned presence on the stage, with a rich background in theater.

McClements portrays Trish, Olivia and Gabby’s mother, the latter of whom also died in the storm.

George Mason as Ash Carter

George Mason has been working in the industry since 2005, making a name for himself in popular soaps like Shortland Street (2011) and Home and Away (2014–2018). He’s also leaped the big screen, appearing in the musical romance Daffodils (2019), Dirt Music (2020), and Netflix’s Oscar-winning psychological Western The Power of the Dog (2021). Up next, Mason will star in the Australian dramedy series Sunny Nights.

Mason plays Ash Carter, an old friend of Kieran’s and Olivia’s boyfriend.

Jessica De Gouw as Olivia Birch

Jessica De Gouw is arguably one of the most recognizable faces on The Survivors, thanks to gigs on well-known shows like Arrow (2012–2014), Dracula (2013–2014), The Crown (2019), and Pennyworth (2020–2021). More recently, she appeared in the Netflix spy action film The Union (2024) and starred alongside Green in Ladies in Black. Up next, she’ll reunite with Mason in Sunny Nights.

De Gouw portrays Olivia, Kieran’s former fling, who’s currently dating Ash. She was with Kieran during the storm that changed everything, and her sister vanished that night.

Miriama Smith as Detective Sue Pendlebury

Miriama Smith has done it all — soaps, sci-fi, drama, and reality TV — with credits including Shortland Street (1997–1998), Xena: Warrior Princess (2000), Mercy Peak (2001–2004), Power Rangers Dino Thunder (2004), Filthy Rich (2016–2017), and even judging season 1 of New Zealand’s Got Talent (2008).

Smith portrays Sergeant Sue Pendlebury, a detective whose latest case leads her straight into the heart of Evelyn Bay’s long-buried secrets.

Johnny Carr has been quietly assembling an impressive list of credits, with memorable turns in the Aussie favorite Five Bedrooms (2019–2023) and the Netflix comedy Wellmania (2023). He even had a small part in the Marvel Cinematic Universe movie Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021).

Carr plays Detective Alex Dan, Pendlebury’s partner in the investigation.

Martin Sacks as Julian Gilroy

Australian actor Martin Sacks is best known for his 12-year run on the beloved drama Blue Heelers (1993–2005), where he starred as Senior Detective P.J. Hasham. As the last original cast member to leave the series, and with 484 episodes under his belt, Sacks became one of the show’s longest-serving characters. 

Since then, he’s popped up in a range of projects, including Wentworth (2013–2018), Wonderland (2014–2015), and the indie film Bosch & Rockit (2022).

On The Survivors, Sacks portrays Julian Gilroy, a longtime Evelyn Bay local and bar owner who blames Kieran for the storm that killed his son Toby.

Rising star Julian Weeks has established himself with roles in Australian series like Savage River (2022) and Prosper (2024), as well as Apple Cider Vinegar, the latter of which also starred Green and McClements. Weeks can next be seen in the show Love Divided By Eleven (2025) and the highly anticipated Mortal Kombat II (2025).

Weeks plays Liam Gilroy, Sean’s nephew and Julian’s grandson, who considers Kieran responsible for the death of his father, Toby.

Don Hany as George Barlin

Don Hany is arguably best known for his award-winning turn as Zane Malik in the crime drama East West 101 (2007–2011), a role that earned him three AACTA nominations and a Logie for Most Outstanding Actor. He’s also had memorable stints on White Collar Blue (2003), Offspring (2010–2011), and Neighbours (2020–2021), but American audiences may recognize him from the NBC medical dramedy Heartbeat (2016).

Hany plays George, a renowned novelist living in Evelyn Bay, who strikes up an unexpected friendship with Mia.
