Michael Jackson biopic moonwalks to the top of the box office

Director Antoine Fuqua’s biopic on Michael Jackson just moonwalked his way to the top of the box office — claiming the No. 1 spot while on pace to shatter records with an over $90 million weekend.

“Michael” hauled in a staggering $39.9 million on its opening Friday, according to the Numbers.

According to industry insiders, the flick’s true potential was revealed when the film earned $12.6 million in Wednesday and Thursday previews, as per the Hollywood Reporter.

The record for largest weekend haul for a music biopic is “Straight Outta Compton” which took in $60.2 million in 2015.

After weeks dominating the top of the charts, “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie” dropped to the No. 2 spot. but it’s still making bank.

The sequel to the 2023 original film, based on the hit Nintendo game, took in $4.56 million, with a total gross of roughly $370 million — only 24 days since its opening.

“Project Hail Mary” dropped down one spot and landed at No. 3 this week, with a take of $3.26 million on its sixth Friday in theaters.

The sci-fi adventure is still going strong after reviewers were blown away, with The Post calling it a “weirdly lovable story” and an “outer space blast.”

Dropping one spot to land at No. 4 this week is “Lee Cronin’s The Mummy,” which picked up $1.55 million.

The Post called the supernatural horror, which is a reimagining of “The Mummy” franchise, “just ‘The Exorcist’ with gauze.”

Dropping a spot to land at No. 5 is “The Drama,” starring Zendaya and Robert Pattinson, picking up $816,302 in its fourth Friday in theaters.
