The latest trailer for Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey has arrived online, showing epic action scenes and an all-star cast.
Matt Damon leads the adaptation of Homer’s epic poem, playing Odysseus, a general making the long and treacherous journey home following victory in the Trojan War. The film is due for release on July 17, and is one of the most anticipated movies of the year. The new preview can be viewed below.
The latest trailer opens with Charlize Theron’s character, Calypso, asking Damon’s Odysseus what he remembers. “A wife, a son” he answers, before adding: “and then we won the war”. The trailer then cuts between action scenes such as the famous Trojan Horse attack, and dramatic moments such as Odysseus’ wife Penelope (Anne Hathaway) fending off suitors as she waits for her husband to return.
Chief among them is the scheming Antinous (Robert Pattinson), established in the clip as the villain of the story. As well as pressuring Penelope to accept that her husband is dead and marry him, he mocks Odysseus’ son, Telemachus (Tom Holland) for believing he will return.
Some of the most exciting moments involve Damon’s hero battling the Cyclops, his armies fighting against rough seas, and Odysseus’ final defiant declaration: “No-one can stand between me and home, not even the gods”.
Zendaya, Lupita Nyong’o, Elliot Page and Jon Bernthal round out the cast for Nolan’s 13th movie, the follow up to 2023’s Oscar-winning Oppenheimer. Nolan reunites with several frequent collaborators, with this being his third time working with Hathaway and Damon.
Last month, Christopher Nolan debuted footage from The Odyssey at CinemaCon in Las Vegas, with those in attendance describing what they saw as “mind-blowing”. Elsewhere, the director confirmed that the film’s running time will be shorter than Oppenheimer, which came in at three hours.
