Jane Fonda narrates a new spot for Tom Steyer‘s California gubernatorial bid, focusing on his climate record as well as a fleeting reference to Eric Swalwell.
“Some politicians are impossible to trust,” Fonda says in the spot, as an image of Swalwell is show briefly.
Fonda adds, “Tom Steyer is a different story. Progressives like me trust Tom because he’s been on the front lines with us for over a decade.”
Swalwell, who had been leading in some polls, exited the race earlier this month, amid multiple sexual misconduct allegations that he has denied. He also resigned his seat in Congress.
In the aftermath, Steyer and his rivals have been working to win over Swalwell’s supporters. Steyer is among the candidates who will take part in a gubernatorial debate on Wednesday evening, to be shown on Nexstar stations and NewsNation.
Fonda, a climate activist, endorsed Steyer earlier this month. In the spot, she says that Steyer is the candidate “who will beat the corporate interests, making your lives more affordable.”
The ad will be part of a seven-figure statewide campaign buy on digital, broadcast and cable, according to a campaign spokesperson.
