We’ve been covering this story for quite a while now, and there’s finally a resolution…
A Hawaii jury has found anesthesiologist Gerhardt Konig guilty of attempting to push his wife off a cliff during what should have been a peaceful, scenic hike on the Pali Puka Trail in Honolulu last March.
Gerhardt had initially been charged with attempted murder in the case after being arrested not long after the incident. But on Wednesday, he was convicted of attempted manslaughter based on extreme mental or emotional disturbance. That charge, per People, carries a potential sentence of up to 20 years behind bars. So, it’s a significant ruling, especially given the disturbing details that came out during the trial.

Arielle Konig, a 37-year-old nuclear engineer, took the stand during the trial and recounted a series of events that sound like something out of a nightmare. She testified that during the hike, her husband allegedly tried to drag her toward the edge of a steep cliff. He then later attempted to inject her with an unknown substance before ultimately beginning to strike her in the head with a rock.
Two hikers reportedly heard her screams for help. They ran to the scene and called 911, prompting Konig to flee before Arielle could be killed.
The trial also took an even more emotional turn when the rest of the couple’s family was pulled into the center of it all. Gerhardt’s own son, Emile Konig, testified against him. In court, Emile revealed that Gerhardt called him immediately after the attack and confessed that he had “tried to kill” Arielle and was planning to jump off a cliff himself. Emile also told the jury that his father said Arielle had “gotten away.”
Prosecuting Attorney Steve Alm did not hold back in acknowledging the effort it took to get to the guilty verdict, saying:
“I want to thank the jurors, the survivor, the independent witnesses at the scene who helped her, the investigators of the Honolulu Police Department, and the determined, thorough, and at all times professional work by Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Joel Garner. It’s a good day for the good guys.”
Gerhardt has maintained throughout the entire ordeal that he acted in self-defense, but the jury ultimately did not accept his version of events — and so came down the guilty verdict.
For now, the now-former anesthesiologist remains in custody at the O’ahu Community Correctional Center as he awaits sentencing.
