Grey’s Anatomy star Kevin McKidd’s indie has struck a deal with Criminal Record producer STV Studios.
McKidd’s Ferryman Films will exclusively co-produce drama with STV Studios, which owns the likes of Patrick Melrose maker Two Cities Television and makes Criminal Record for Apple TV.
The pair’s first collab is an exclusive book option of William Shaw’s crime thriller The Red Shore, which will see STV Studios Drama and Ferryman work together on developing the novel for screen. The Red Shore is the first in Shaw’s new Eden Driscoll detective series.
McKidd’s Ferryman Films is led by the Grey’s Anatomy star and Charlotte Rutherford, making shows that “feel proudly Scottish, but travel effortlessly to global streamers and UK broadcasters alike.” McKidd has played Dr. Owen Hunt in Grey’s Anatomy since 2008. His other credits include Danny Boyle’s Trainspotting, in which he played Tommy Mackenzie.
McKidd said: “I created Ferryman Films to build distinctive, character-led stories that have the potential to connect widely with audiences internationally. Scotland is a huge part of Ferryman’s DNA because it’s such an important part of who I am. However, we’re not limiting ourselves to stories set there – for us it’s about finding projects with real identity, wherever they come from. We’re genuinely excited to be joining forces with STV Studios and its drama labels.”
STV Studios boss David Mortimer added: “Our drama labels continue to go from strength to strength, with an increasingly impressive slate of titles in their portfolio. I’m delighted to welcome Ferryman Films to the family through this exclusive partnership. We share the same ambition to create original, high‑quality drama with global resonance, and Ferryman’s ethos, ambition and development slate align perfectly with our values.”
Earlier this month, STV, which owns STV Studios, posted a loss of £4M ($5.3M) for the full year to December 31. Revenue at the production arm was stable at £83.2M while adjusted operating profit was down to £3.9M.
