EXCLUSIVE: Laura Lekkos has come aboard to adapt Rebecca Serle’s New York Times bestseller Expiration Dates, which is in development at Amazon MGM Studios with Emma Roberts set to star. Deadline first told you about the project.
The novel follows a woman who receives paper slips from the universe with the date her relationship will expire. When a man comes along and defies the pattern, she begins to question her predetermined timeline.
Featherweight Pictures’ Jessica Pugh and Chelsea Bradshaw are producing Expiration Dates alongside Belletrists’ Roberts and Karah Preiss, and EPs Matt Matruski, David Stone, and Serle.
Lekkos previously wrote the romantic comedy Relationship Goals for Amazon MGM Studios, starring Kelly Rowland and Cliff “Method Man” Smith, which was released February 4 on Prime Video. It was announced recently that she will adapt the bestselling romantic comedy novel The Marriage Bargain for 20th Century Studios. Her debut novel, All the Little Ways, was bought by Simon and Schuster’s Gallery Books and will be released in June. She also wrote the script for Somewhere Only We Know, a feature adaptation of Maureen Goo’s novel set up at Netflix, and has multiple other projects in development, including Daring to Live for Amazon MGM Studios, a true-story dramedy based on Sheri Hunter’s memoir. The scribe is repped by Gersh and Felker McGinnis & Ryan.

Serle’s novels have sold millions of copies sold in over 30 territories around the world. Her New York Times bestseller One Italian Summer has sold over 1.5 copies worldwide and is in development at Paramount with Temple Hill producing. Her novel In Five Years, which has sold more than 2.3 million copies worldwide in 32 languages, is in development at New Line with Working Title producing. Her latest release Once and Again is in early development at Apple. Serle’s YA novel When You Were Mine was adapted into the feature film Rosaline, which was produced by 21 Laps and premiered on Hulu in 2022. Serle additionally developed the hit TV adaptation Famous in Love, based on her YA series of the same name.
