Dax Shepard has FINALLY broken his silence on Kristen Bell‘s controversial anniversary post!
As you’ll recall, back in October, the Frozen star took to Instagram to mark their 12th wedding anniversary. But in her caption, she included a very head-scratching joke from Dax, writing:
“Happy 12th wedding anniversary to the man who once said to me: ‘I would never kill you. A lot of men have killed their wives at a certain point. Even though I’m heavily incentivized to kill you, I never would‘”

That’s not very funny ever, but it certainly didn’t help that October also happens to be Domestic Violence Awareness Month. The whole joke went over like a wet blanket. The couple was widely called out online — causing Kristen to skip out on Nobody Wants This promo and limit comments on her social media account. However, she still hasn’t commented on the backlash… and apparently, it took her a while to tell her own husband about the drama!
On Monday’s episode of The Armchair Expert podcast, the Parenthood alum broke his silence on the whole situation, saying:
“I was alerted by someone that this whole thing was happening. I didn’t know, and Kristen knew through her publicist but didn’t tell me. So, I actually didn’t know, and this was brought to my attention.”
He was in the dark about the drama for “a week and a half.” He shared:
“I had no clue. Someone comforted me, and I was like, ‘What are you [talking about]?’ And then I had to go to Kristen, like, ‘What are they talking about?’ She’s like, ‘Oh, that post I had.’”
Inneresting!
Why didn’t she tell him?? Guess she was hoping it would all blow over without him noticing? Hmm. A little strange.
His guest for the episode, Nikki Glaser, went on to reveal she was considering joking about the scandal when she hosted the Golden Globes, she recalled:
“Die My Love. If I Had Legs, I’d Kick You. Sorry, Baby. These are not just captions to Dax Shepard’s Instagram post for Mother’s Day. Or, like … these are not just Dax Shepard captions for his anniversary post. These are movies nominated tonight.”
While Dax thought it was “very funny,” the comedian chose not to go there:
“But I didn’t do it because I also, like, it was old news by then. But mostly because I didn’t know where you stood on [the topic]. I wasn’t one of those people that reached out like, ‘I got your back, man.’ ‘Cause I’m like, ‘Maybe he doesn’t even know about this.’”
We bet Kristen’s happy she avoided that joke! Especially since this whole scandal reportedly had her spiraling and second-guessing everything she said for a while! The last thing she would have wanted was for it to be placed back into the spotlight.
We’d also be willing to bet a lot of domestic abuse victims are happy she avoided that joke, too!
It’s pretty wild Dax had no clue about all this going on for so long, though! Makes you wonder what the dynamic of their marriage is if Kristen didn’t want to lean on his shoulder during the drama…
