EXCLUSIVE: Damián Szifron is helming El Sobrino for Netflix. Cameras are rolling on the Netflix movie, which is set in the world of classical music and stars Leonardo Sbaraglia (Pain and Glory).
The film is the latest out of Netflix Argentina, which enjoyed global success with The Eternaut and has greenlit a busy slate of movies and series of late, as well as moving into expanded new offices in Buenos Aires.
El Sobrino comes from K&S Films, the label that produces The Eternaut. The drama comedy will follow an internationally renowned pianist at the height of his career (Sbaraglia). His world is turned upside down upon discovering that his nine-year-old nephew possesses a musical talent that could surpass his own. There is no confirmed English-language title yet; it translates as The Nephew.
Szifron directs from his own script. Filming kicked off today in Ramos Mejía, in Buenos Aires Province. We hear that the journey of the protagonists will take in Argentina, Hamburg, London and New York.
Joining Sbaraglia in the cast are Rita Cortese, Luisana Lopilato and Valeria Lois, alongside newcomer Luan Adler Fuks. There will also be special appearances from Vincent Macaigne and iconic Italian star Franco Nero (Django).
As shooting commenced, Szifron said: “Leo [Sbaraglia] is at an incredible point in his acting career: lucid, profound, mature and vital, and I am especially excited about the reconnection with my beloved Rita, meeting Luisana and Valeria, discovering such a young and unique actor as Luan, and the opportunity to collaborate with Franco Nero, my childhood idol.”
K&S previously worked with Szifron on Tiempo de Valientes and Relatos Salvajes. Matías Mosteirin, Hugo Sigman and Leticia Cristi are producing his new movie.
“Damián is back with a vengeance: El Sobrino is surely the best script we’ve ever read,” said Mosteirin. “Szifron plays with genres and shows us that comedy can lead us, with humor and beauty, to explore profound themes of the human condition. With this film, he invites us to reflect on art and creation, family ties, love and loneliness, our origins, and the passage of time.”
