EXCLUSIVE: While Dean Georgaris and John Fox are awaiting decision on their NBC pilot Key Witness, they have sold another series project to Hulu.
Titled Close Protection, the romantic thriller, co-created by Georgaris and Fox and to be written by Georgaris, is about an American bodyguard protecting a British princess.
The premise echos an idea Kevin Costner had been developing for a sequel to his 1992 movie The Bodyguard, in which his titular character would’ve been protecting Princess Diana, that was scrapped after her death.
It also fits into a romantasy genre of bodyguard stories that had been heating up. Netflix is adapting Katherine Center’s novel The Bodyguard into a 2026 holiday rom-com titled Guarding Stars, which stars Leighton Meester and Jared Padalecki.
The Brave creator Georgaris and longtime Davis Entertainment President Fox executive produce alongside Davis Entertainment founder John Davis. Universal Television, where Georgaris and Davis Entertainment have deals, is the studio.
Georgaris and Fox’s NBC drama pilot Key Witness stars Emily Deschanel as a trailblazing psychologist who challenges the field of criminology by shifting the investigative focus to the victim rather than just the perpetrator in order to uncover the crucial clues that more traditional methods leave behind. It is believed to be in serious contention for a series pickup at the network.
Georgaris, who recently served as executive producer/showrunner on the Quantum Leap reboot, is repped by CAA and Robert Offer at Sloane Offer Weber & Dern.
