EXCLUSIVE: More cast has been set for Apple TV‘s untitled TV series based on Metropolis from Philip Kerr’s Berlin Noir novels.
Amir El-Masry (Giant, The Crown), Stephen Campbell Moore (Industry, Criminal Record), Alex Nowak (Coffee Morning Club, The End), Jacob McCarthy (SAS: Rogue Heroes, Mary & George) and Amanda Lawrence (Gone, Malory Towers) are the latest additions to the ensemble cast.
Based on Kerr’s global bestselling Berlin Noir book series and produced by Industry maker Bad Wolf, Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman’s PlayTone and German co-producerStudio Babelsberg, the series follows iconic detective Bernie Gunther’s origin story in 1928, as the young police office is promoted to the intimidating and elite Berlin Murder Squad to investigate what appears to be a serial killer on the edge of society.
El-Masry will be Bruno Stahlecker, Campbell Moore plays Christian Voight, Nowak is Fritz Hart, McCarthy plays Max Hart and Lawrence boards as Frau Weitendorf. They join the previously announced Jack Lowden, Colin Firth, Maxine Peake, Daniel Mays, Roger Allam, Liz Kingsman and Carys Daniels in the cast. Production is underway in Berlin.
Conclave and Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy writer Peter Straughan is adapting the books, with Tom Shankland (House of Guinness, The Leopard) directing. Both are exec producers alongside Luke Snellin; Jane Tranter, Dan McCulloch and Ryan Rasmussen for Bad Wolf; and Hanks and Goetzman for PlayTone.
Author Kerr wrote 14 Bernie Gunther novels, finishing Metropolis just before he passed away in 2018. His widow, Jane Thynne, owns the copyright to the books through their company, Thynker Ltd., which is represented by United Agents. Thynne serves as a consulting producer.
