EXCLUSIVE: A24 UK has optioned the rights to Alexis Hall’s buzzy BookTok hit Boyfriend Material.
A24 has picked up TV rights for Boyfriend Material, which follows a neurotic and messy twenty-something struggling to keep his life on track. When Luc’s world unexpectedly collides with Oliver, an uptight and workaholic criminal barrister, at a low point in his life, what began as an unlikely pairing develops into a heartfelt and humorous enemies-to-lovers romance.
Boyfriend Material was published in 2020 and broke out on BookTok, the corner of TikTok that can make or break a novel and is becoming ever more influential in the literary adaptations world. It is the first in a trilogy, with Husband Material published in 2022 and Father Material set for release in a few weeks’ time. The books have been published globally in more than 50 editions and multiple languages.
Hall writes urban fantasy, science fiction and romance novels, which outside of the trilogy include detective novel The Affair of the Mysterious Letter and Rosaline Palmer Takes the Cake. The latter was optioned by David Mandell and Sonic the Hedgehog franchise producer Original Film through a discretionary fund with Paramount in 2022.
A24 UK, which is run by Piers Wenger and Rose Garnett, has won out in a number of bidding wars so far this year. Last week, the division picked up Nick Brucker’s White Smoke, which will star Benedict Cumberbatch and be produced with his SunnyMarch outfit. It has also optioned Patrick Radden Keefe’s London Falling, Laura Shepherd-Robinson’s We Are the Dead and Marie-Claire Chappet’s Broken Toys.
Upcoming A24 UK projects include Apple TV’s Husbands with Juno Temple and Richard Gadd, Michaela Coel’s new series First Day on Earth and Molly Manning Walker’s Major Players for Channel 4.
