The Rolling Stones are starting up a new album era, announcing Tuesday (May 5) that their 25th studio LP, Foreign Tongues, is officially on its way.
Due out July 10, the 14-track LP will see core members Mick Jagger, Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood uniting once again, this time joined by an eye-popping list of guest artists. Paul McCartney and Steve Winwood will make appearances, as will The Cure frontman Robert Smith and Chad Smith of the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
Ahead of Foreign Tongues, the band has released two tracks from the project: album opener “Rough and Twisted” and lead single “In the Stars.” The full project was created in less than a month at Metropolis Studios in West London — as seen in a new album trailer featuring footage of the trio working hard and goofing off in the studio — with Hackney Diamonds collaborator Andrew Watt returning to produce.
“It was a very intense few weeks recording Foreign Tongues,” Jagger said in a statement. “We went as fast as we could.”
“The atmosphere in the room was so creative,” Wood added. “The whole band was on top form throughout the whole process. Very often we nailed it on the first take. I hope everyone loves it.”
Also featured on the album are longtime bassist Darryl Jones and drummer Steve Jordan, who joined the Stones after the death of Charlie Watts in 2021. The rockers found a way to include their late bandmate on Foreign Tongues as well, incorporating a recording of Watts playing drums in one of his final studio sessions.
“It was great to be working in London again, and to have that London vibe around us,” said Richards. “It was a month of concentrated punch. To me, it’s all about the enjoyment of it. I’m blessed to be able to do this and long may it last.”
The Stones last dropped an album in 2023, with Hackney Diamonds reaching No. 3 on the Billboard 200. In total, the band has notched 61 projects on the chart, including nine No. 1s.
