Meryl Streep and Anna Wintour share a historic relative

Meryl Streep confirmed that she and Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour are distant cousins while promoting the highly anticipated “Devil Wears Prada 2” film.

“It came out that … y’all are, like, fifth cousins or something,” “Today” host Jenna Bush Hager told the “Mama Mia” star on her “Open Book” podcast Wednesday.

Streep explained the connection to Hager and her co-stars, Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt and Stanley Tucci, saying that their family roots are from Bucks County, Pennsylvania.

“We are old English, the Wilkinsons, my mother’s side,” she said. “It’s pretty funny.”

Streep shared that she was unaware of the family connection until recently, joking that she might have “copied” Wintour’s mannerisms in the film if she had known.

“Maybe she’s copying me,” the “Only Murders in the Building” star quipped.

Blunt and Tucci were in disbelief, as Streep playfully added, “Handle that.”

Earlier this month, “Today” revealed that Streep and Wintour, both 76, shared their fifth great-grandparents, Thomas Smith and Elizabeth Kinsey, and were sixth cousins.

The iconic duo has worked together throughout the years since the release of “The Devil Wears Prada” in 2006.

Streep portrayed Miranda Priestly, the editor-in-chief of Runway Fashion magazine, widely believed to be inspired by Wintour.

The movie was inspired by a novel written by Wintour’s former junior assistant, Lauren Weisberger.

Most recently, Streep and Wintour paired up to promote the film’s sequel and were spotted mingling at the 2025 Milan Fashion Week last September, per Variety.

The actress also convinced Wintour to join her on May’s cover of Vogue edition while dressed in Prada.

At the time, the fashion legend gushed over being portrayed by Wintour, saying, “It’s such an honor to be played by Meryl, however distant Miranda is from myself. Who wouldn’t think that that wasn’t the most extraordinary gift?”

“The Devil Wears Prada 2” will be released in theaters on May 1.
