Twenty years later, the coat still fits.
Anne Hathaway left “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” in New York on Wednesday wearing a very familiar outfit: an emerald green vintage coat with cheetah-print trim last seen on her character Andy Sachs in “The Devil Wears Prada.”
She wore the piece in the 2006 film’s iconic makeover montage, set to Madonna’s “Vogue.”
The 43-year-old actress, who’s been on a global press tour for “The Devil Wears Prada 2” ahead of its May 1 release, updated the look with dark cat-eye sunglasses and Aquazzura brown glitter mesh slingback pumps ($1,085).
In the original film, Andy paired the coat with gold Giuseppe Zanotti pumps, Chanel sunglasses and a Kate Spade giraffe-print bag.
Assistant costume designer Tracy Cox told Variety in 2021 that the piece — a vintage find from What Goes Around Comes Around in Beverly Hills — was his favorite from the whole film.
“It was packed down in a box, and it had this really old smell to it, so I was concerned about having to dry clean, but we didn’t get a chance, so she ended up having to wear it like that,” Cox said.
Original costume designer Patricia Field was equally enamored. “Loved the green coat when Andy was coming outside of the subway,” she told the outlet. “It was unique and vintage, and I received very positive reactions from the fans.”
The coat remains a highlight for the sequel’s creative team, too. In a recent red carpet interview with The Hook, director David Frankel, writer Aline Brosh McKenna and “Devil Wears Prada 2” costume designer Molly Rogers all named it as their top pick from the montage.
Rogers also confirmed that Hathaway still owns the coat and came up with the idea to include a nod to it in the sequel as an Easter egg.
The subtle reference? In the new film’s Milan montage, Andy wears the inverse of the original look — a leopard-print coat with green trim.
