Sam Neill cancer-free after five years of treatment

Jurassic Park star Sam Neill has revealed that he is now cancer-free after five years of treatment.

The actor first went public with his diagnosis in 2023, having been confirmed to have a type of blood cancer called angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma the year prior. He went to the doctor and got the diagnosis after noticing swollen glands during his time promoting 2022’s Jurassic World Dominion.

Now, after almost five years of battling stage-three cancer, Neill has revealed that he has been given the all clear.

“I’ve been living with a particular type of lymphoma for about five years and I was on chemotherapy and the pretty miserable business but it was keeping me alive,” he told Australian network 7News.

He added that while he felt like he was “at a loss” and “on the way out” when the chemotherapy stopped working, he decided to undergo a new cutting-edge treatment called CAR T-cell therapy, which works by genetically modifying blood cells.

“I’ve just had a scan just now and there is no cancer in my body. That’s an extraordinary thing,” he said. “I’m very, very excited that this can happen.”

Now, he is advocating for the new form of treatment to be made more readily available in his native Australia – as it is currently only being used in clinical trials – and teased his return to acting, adding: “It’s time I did another movie.”

Neill is best recognised for playing Alan Grant in the Jurassic Park franchise, with his last time in the role being 2022’s Jurassic World Dominion, where he starred alongside original co-stars Laura Dern and Jeff Goldblum.

Speaking about his struggle with cancer previously, the actor said that he was coming to terms with the diagnosis but determined to spend more time with his family. “I’m not afraid to die, but it would annoy me,” he told The Guardian in 2023.

“I’d really like another decade or two. We’ve built all these lovely terraces, we’ve got these olive trees and cypresses. I want to be around to see it all mature,” he added. “And I’ve got my lovely little grandchildren. I want to see them get big. But as for the dying? I couldn’t care less.”

In 2025 he confirmed that he was in remission, after years of being uncertain of how much time he had left.

The latest film in the Jurassic Park franchise was Jurassic World Rebirth, which arrived in cinemas worldwide last summer and starred Scarlett Johansson, Bridgerton star Jonathan Bailey and Moonlight Oscar-winner Mahershala Ali.
