CBS News London Bureau Chief Claire Day To Depart

Claire Day, a 23-year veteran of CBS News who has served as London bureau chief since May, is leaving the network.

The move comes as the network is planning a new leadership structure for its international coverage, with the introduction of a foreign editor role, CBS News president and executive editor Tom Cibrowski wrote in a memo to employees.

Shayndi Rice, deputy bureau chief for the Middle East and North Africa for The Wall Street Journal, is expected to be named to the new role, according to a source familiar with the matter. Breaker Media reported last week on the hire.

“Our London Bureau will be moving to a new editorial leadership structure, with the introduction of a Foreign Editor role overseeing all international coverage.  As part of this transition, it has been mutually agreed that Claire Day will leave us on May 1st,” Cibrowski wrote in the memo.

He wrote, “Claire has been an advocate for courageous stories, an expert at complicated logistics and a wonderful partner to teams across the entire news division. Her work made a difference for CBS News.”

Day joined the network in 2002 and, before her promotion last year, was deputy bureau chief and director of news assignments. She was nominated for Emmy Awards for the network’s coverage of Israel, coverage of the coronation of King Charles, and as part of the CBS Evening News team.

Her departure is the latest change at the network under new owners Paramount-Skydance and editor in chief Bari Weiss. The network has gone through two rounds of layoffs under the new ownership.

Rice, who is based in Israel, helps oversee and manage coverage of reporters in the region, per the Journal. She previously was based in Chicago, where she was a reporter and later Midwest bureau chief. She also has covered tech companies, among other assignments.
