EXCLUSIVE: The Night Agent once again has lined up big-name cast additions for its upcoming fourth season. Bosch star Titus Welliver, Trevante Rhodes (Moonlight), Li Jun Li (Sinners) and Elizabeth Lail (You) are set as new series regulars opposite star Gabriel Basso in the Netflix action thriller from Sony Pictures TV, which is relocating from New York to Los Angeles for its fourth installment.
As usual, no details are being revealed about the characters, but Welliver is said to be playing Duval, a special DOJ prosecutor; Rhodes is believed to be playing Dom, Peter Sutherland’s (Basso) new partner; while Li is thought to be playing Dom’s wife Min. And, in a reveal The Night Agent fans have long been waiting for, Lail will play Peter’s ex-fiancée Zoe.
Dedicating himself to his new career as a Night Agent, Peter swore off romantic relationships after his job had put Rose Larkin, his love interest for the first two seasons, in danger. He may now be thrown back into that arena with his ex-fiancée Zoe re-entering his life. The only fleeting reference of her so far had been when Peter gave some of her clothes to Rose in Season 1.
The Dom and Duval characters were teased by The Night Agent creator/showrunner Shawn Ryan in an interview with Deadline about Season 3.
At the end of the Season 3 finale, Peter’s boss, Deputy Director Mosley (Albert Jones), told him that he was getting a partner. Ryan revealed at the time that the partner would be “a new character that we’ve never met before.”
The writer-producer also noted how “by the end of the season, Peter is thinking about, how do I achieve some balance in my life.”
Dom may help with that. Poised to serve as a surrogate big brother to Peter, Dom is married, showing to Peter that a Night Agent could have a personal life and a family.
Duval is believed to be tied to a Season 4 storyline Deadline stumbled upon when we asked Ryan whether, in light of the events in Season 3 involving the corrupt President using Night Action to cover up his crimes, it isn’t dangerous to have trained killers serving at the pleasure of the President with no oversight.
“You are reading our writers room mail for Season 4, so you’re absolutely right,” Ryan said at the time. “There are people that would look at these actions and have a very different point of view than Peter about whether this is a good organization or not. That’s a major thrust of Season 4.”
Welliver’s special DOJ prosecutor Duval is believed to be one of those people who view Night Action as an extrajudicial Presidential hit squad. Assigned to investigate the program, he is said to be targeting Peter.
Series star Basso is the only Season 3 cast member confirmed to return for next season so far, with Ryan teasing that others would be back too.
The castings of Welliver, Rhodes, Li and Lail follow the addition of Stephen Moyer, Jennifer Morrison, David Lyons, and Ward Horton as series regulars for Season 3. (The Night Agent introduces a new story arc for Peter Sutherland each season with a largely new cast.)
The post-Peak TV contraction in the volume of scripted series has reduced the opportunities for actors, which has helped The Night Agent sign well known TV stars, Ryan shared with Deadline.
“For a show like ours, it was a little bit of a buyer’s market,” Ryan said about the high-profile Season 3 cast additions. “I feel good as a show that we’re able to assemble that level of talent, I also feel a lot of sympathy right now.”
Known for his role as LAPD Detective Harry Bosch in the Amazon franchise, Welliver recently starred in the indie film Ricky, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and recurred on AMC’s Dark Winds. Welliver next stars on the MGM+ series The Westies and has movie Hotel Tehran and Killing Castro coming up. He is repped by UTA and Leverage Management.
Rhodes won a Film Independent Spirit Award for his work in Barry Jenkins’ Best Picture Oscar winner Moonlight. He portrayed Mike Tyson in Hulu’s miniseries Mike and also appeared in the films Bruiser, The United States vs. Billie Holiday, Bird Box, The Predator and 12 Strong, among others. He’s repped by UTA and Jackoway Austen Tyerman.
Wu Assassins alumna Li recently played Grace Chow in Sinners. She was recently cast in a key guest starring role on Season 3 of HBO’s The Last Of Us and will next star opposite Nicolas Cage in Prime Video’s Spider-Noir. She’s repped by Gersh, Authentic Talent & Literary Management and Jackoway Austen Tyerman.
Lail is known for starring in Blumhouse’s Five Nights at Freddy’s movies, in Season 1 of Netflix’s You and recurring as Anna on ABC’s Once Upon a Time. She also starred opposite Jimmy Wolk on NBC’s Ordinary Joe and recurred on HBO Max’s Gossip Girl reboot. Lail, who most recently did two episodes of CBS’ Elsbeth, is repped by Gersh and Authentic Talent & Literary Management.
