Heels, sneakers and ballet flats have their time and place, but when it comes to versatile everyday footwear, I don’t think anything beats a pair of chunky loafers.

A twist on a traditional style, they team perfectly with jeans, dresses, skirts and shorts, plus the thick treaded soles offer support and traction in even the most treacherous weather (a must for city commuters). They feel more polished and professional than sneakers, but are better suited for everyday wear than heels — provided you pick the right ones, that is.

Therein lies the issue; as anyone who’s ever broken in a pair of Weejuns knows well, loafers can be stiff and surprisingly uncomfortable, especially for someone with sensitive ankles like myself. So when Page Six Photo Director Tori Schneebaum recommended Coach’s Leah Loafers, swearing they were the comfiest version she’s ever tried, I promptly placed an order for my own pair.

Bloomingdale’s

And boy, am I glad I bought these shoes. They required basically zero break-in time, since the soft leather upper and memory-foam padding make them incredibly comfortable right out of the box.

After weeks of wearing them to the office and out to events with nary a blister, I decided to put my Leahs through their (literal) paces by packing them for a recent weeklong vacation in London and Edinburgh, where I knew I’d be walking nonstop.

My beloved loafers didn’t miss a beat, even when I managed to surpass 20,000 steps in a day while wearing them. Plus, they styled seamlessly with all of the outfits I’d planned for my trip; I even wore them to my friend’s rehearsal dinner, where they came in handy during the cocktail hour on the lawn. (I did feel a little bad for other guests whose stilettos kept sinking into the grass.)

Don’t just take my word for it, though; the Leah Loafers have racked up dozens of five-star reviews online.

“I finally found the chunky loafer I’ve been searching for. Love that the sole is chunky but not platform height. It’s also very lightweight. The leather is soft and needed no time to break in,” one Bloomingdale’s shopper wrote.

“These are my favorite loafers to date! I would wear these in this lifetime and the next!” another enthused, while a third called them the “holy grail of office footwear,” adding, “I now own these loafers in like ten different colors.”

I might just have to follow her lead and pick up a patent pair next.
