‘Spaceballs 2’: Everything to Know About the Long-Awaited Sequel (Including Which Cast Members Are Returning!)

Spaceballs 2 has officially found its Lone Starr and Dark Helmet — once again.

On June 12, Amazon MGM Studios revealed that Spaceballs 2, the sequel to Mel Brooks’ Star Wars spoof film Spaceballs, will premiere in 2027. On the same day, Deadline confirmed that Bill Pullman and Rick Moranis will return to play their respective roles.

First confirmed in June 2024, the long-awaited follow-up is set to bring contemporary satirical takes on the ever-expanding Star Wars franchise, per Deadline. Spaceballs, released in 1987, featured an unforgettable cast, including Pullman, Moranis, Joan Rivers, John Candy, Daphne Zuniga and Brooks himself. Despite its humble box office success, the film is still a fan favorite today.

The original Spaceballs quite explicitly hints at a sequel in a scene between Lone Starr (a parody of Luke Skywalker and Han Solo) and the Yoda-esque character of Yogurt (played by Brooks). Starr says, “I wonder if we’ll ever see each other again,” to which Yogurt replies, “God willing, we’ll all meet again in Spaceballs 2: The Search for Money.”

However, in the decades that followed, nothing materialized — until now.

As excitement continues to build for a return to the Spaceballs universe, here’s everything we know so far about the long-awaited sequel, Spaceballs 2.

Who is in the cast of Spaceballs 2?

Josh Gad, known for his iconic role as the anthropomorphic snowman in Disney’s Frozen and taking the stage as Elder Arnold Cunningham in the Broadway blockbuster musical The Book of Mormon, will star in Spaceballs 2, per Variety.

While Gad’s specific role in the film is still under wraps, the actor expressed gratitude and excitement about his involvement on social media.

“Early days still, but working with the legendary Mel freaking Brooks to make something worthy of this franchise and his legacy has been a dream come true,” Gad wrote in June 2024, concluding with a message to fans that the team is “doing everything in our power alongside Mel to make sure you get what you’ve waited 37 long years for. EVERYTHING.”

In June 2025, Deadline reported that original Spaceballs stars Pullman and Moranis will return for the sequel. They will be joined by Zuniga, who will once again play Princess Vespa, per The Wrap.

Brooks will also be back, glimmering in gold again as the merchandise-obsessed Yogurt.

As for newcomers to the Spaceballs universe, additional cast members will include Keke Palmer and Thunderbolts* star Lewis Pullman, who is Pullman’s son.

Is there a trailer for Spaceballs 2?

There isn’t a trailer for the movie, but Amazon MGM Studios released a video announcing the sequel’s 2027 release date.

The clip began by poking fun at the number of Star Wars sequels, prequels, and spinoffs that have emerged since the original trilogy premiered and the number of popular fantasy and science fiction franchises that are now available to watch.

“But in thirty-eight years, there has only ever been one … Spaceballs,” the text read. “Until now …”

At the end of the video, Brooks appeared in a Spaceballs sweatshirt.

“After 40 years, we asked, ‘What do the fans want?’ But instead, we’re making this movie,” he said. “May the Schwartz be with you!”

The teaser also featured Dark Helmet’s headwear, now bruised and busted.

Who is directing Spaceballs 2?

Brooks will return as a producer but will not direct this time around. Instead, Josh Greenbaum, known for his work on the 2023 comedy Strays and the 2024 documentary Will & Harper, will take the helm.

Who is writing Spaceballs 2?

Along with starring in the film, Gad is also co-writing the screenplay alongside Benji Samit and Dan Hernandez, per Deadline.

Samit and Hernandez are known for their work on family-friendly films like Pokémon Detective Pikachu, The Addams Family 2 and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem.

Plot details for Spaceballs 2 haven’t been revealed, but the movie is described as a “Non-Prequel Non-Reboot Sequel Part Two but with Reboot Elements Franchise Expansion Film,” per Deadline.

Why did it take so long to make Spaceballs 2?

Fans have waited decades for the sequel, which has been attempted several times.

In 2008, Spaceballs debuted an animated series with Brooks as its creator and producer. It starred several of the original cast members, including Rivers and Zuniga.

While the show featured many of the same characters, its format strayed from the sci-fi space narrative of Spaceballs and instead was a series of parodies, each episode serving as a satirical commentary on several contemporary hits, such as Lord of the Rings, American Idol and Harry Potter.

Ultimately, the series wasn’t well-received and was canceled after one season.

Spaceballs 2 is set to be released in 2027, the 40th anniversary of the original film.
