Shemar Moore Might Be Joined by More Familiar ‘S.W.A.T.’ Faces in Upcoming Spinoff ‘EXILES’, Exec Says: ‘Still Figuring Out’

NEED TO KNOW

  • The chairman of Sony Pictures Television said they’re “still figuring out” if fan-favorite characters from S.W.A.T. will appear on the show’s spinoff, EXILES
  • The spinoff was announced last month, mere days after the series finale of S.W.A.T. aired following its third cancellation at CBS
  • So far, Shemar Moore is the only star set to make the jump to the spinoff, reprising his role as Daniel “Hondo” Harrelson on EXILES

S.W.A.T. fans hoping to see more familiar faces on the show’s spinoff, EXILES, need to keep their fingers crossed.

Keith LeGoy, chairman of Sony Pictures Television, said bringing fan-favorite characters from the canceled flagship series over to the recently announced spinoff starring Shemar Moore is something they’re “still figuring out,” according to Deadline.

“There is a S.W.A.T. family and that family is important. We would love to have other family members involved in some way, whether it’s all of them all of the time, some of them some of the time, or something in between,” LeGoy said at the Banff TV Festival. “That’s something that we are still figuring out.”

EXILES was announced mere days following the series finale of S.W.A.T. with star Moore, 55, set as the sole returnee, reprising his role as Daniel “Hondo” Harrelson.

The spinoff is set to begin after “a high-profile mission goes sideways” and Moore’s Hondo comes out of retirement to spearhead an experimental S.W.A.T. unit. The group, comprised of inexperienced recruits, must overcome clashing personalities and generational divides as Hondo seeks to “turn a squad of outsiders into a team capable of protecting the city and saving the program that made him who he is,” according to the official logline.

This isn’t the first executive who has expressed a desire to have more S.W.A.T. stars reprise their characters on EXILES.

Katherine Pope, president of Sony Pictures Television, told Variety last month that fans should expect some “favorites” from the original series to pop up on the spinoff.

“For sure,” Pope said, noting the shows now exist in their own “universe.”

“There is a clear world that we’re exploring here,” Pope continued. “We’re still putting it all together, but for sure, I think you can expect some of your favorites to be a part of it in some way.”

Hours after news of the spinoff broke, Moore shared an Instagram post declaring himself the “Tom Brady of S.W.A.T.” He also addressed him being the only cast member announced to return, calling his former co-stars “a strong squad, a family, a team.”

Not all of the cast felt the same, however.

David Lim, who played Victor Tan on all eight seasons of the CBS series, shared a post to Instagram reflecting on his time on S.W.A.T. and expressed how it made him feel for the cast to be “brushed aside” for EXILES.

“I’d be lying if I said the rollout of the new spinoff didn’t sting,” he said. “It was tough to see it announced just two days after our finale — with no mention of the cast who helped build S.W.A.T. from day one.”

All seasons of S.W.A.T. are streaming on Paramount+.
