NEED TO KNOW
- The winner of a nearly $1.4 million California lottery prize has yet to come forward
- If the person who purchased the ticket doesn’t claim the prize by the end of Monday, June 16, the money will be allocated to California’s public schools
- The winning ticket was originally purchased on Dec. 18, 2024 in Sacramento
The winner of a California lottery ticket has just hours left to claim the nearly $1.4 million prize.
On Dec. 18, 2024, a person bought a ticket with the winning numbers 6, 15, 18, 33 and 49 from an ARCO gas station on the corner of Marconi Avenue and Eastern Avenue in Sacramento, according to a release from the California Lottery.
Six months later, the ticket worth $1,391,550 is set to expire on Monday, June 16. There is no way to identify who bought the lucky Powerball ticket.
“If no one submits a claim in time, the nearly $1.4 million prize money will instead be allocated to public schools in California,” the California Lottery said, adding that it “exists solely to generate extra money for public education and has raised more than $1 billion just in unclaimed prizes since Lottery tickets first went on sale in 1985.”
The prize can be claimed in-person or received by mail from the organization, with a postmark on or before June 16. Instructions on how to claim the prize can be found on the California Lottery website.
Opportunities abound for the winner — if the person can claim their prize in time. Recently, a 64-year-old man, David Strickland, was able to plan his first vacation ever after he won a $1 million prize in the Massachusetts State Lottery.

He chose the cash option and received a one-time, pre-tax payment of $650,000.
“Strickland said he has never taken a vacation before but plans to change that by putting his winnings towards a trip to Las Vegas,” lottery officials said.
