Jennifer Love Hewitt ‘went blind for a second’ after being hooked in the eye on ‘IKWYDLS’

Jennifer Love Hewitt didn’t walk away from the original I Know What You Did Last Summer films unscathed, but she’s still coming back for more.

The actress, who starred in the original 1997 slasher and its 1998 sequel, says that both movies came with a parting gift from the Fisherman (Muse Watson), the hook-wielding killer who hunts down the film’s unlucky group of teens.

“I think people didn’t know that I actually got hurt on both movies with the actual hook,” Hewitt said during a recent chat with Extra. “I think people think, ‘Oh, it’s a hook movie so it’s probably like plastic or whatever.'”

But according to Hewitt, a real hook was used for filming, to ensure that it would authentically “glimmer” in the light. “It would have like a little tennis ball on it and that would come off [when] we would do a scene,” she explained.

Hewitt then shared that her first injury came during the climactic finale of the original film.

“There’s a moment where Julie is under the boat and the fisherman comes. So they moved my mark for this take, and then they moved his mark but they didn’t tell either one of us that they did that,” she recalled. “And he hooks through this grate and he actually hooked my eye, and scratched my eye.”

Hewitt added, “I went blind and had to fix that.”

Laughing, she clarified, “We’re fine, everything’s fine. We’re all good — I went blind for a second and it’s fine. So that was scary.”

Then came the sequel, I Still Know What You Did Last Summer, which saw Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. reprise their roles, once again facing off against Watson’s fisherman.

“In the second movie, he pulls me under the bed and I got hooked in the ankle with it,” Hewitt recalled. “And it actually went through the ankle in one of the takes and that was very exciting. I had to be looked at.”

She joked, “Again, I’m fine. Here I am, back again, ready for more.”

Hewitt and Prinze Jr. are once again reprising their roles for the fourth entry in the franchise, 2025’s I Know What You Did Last Summer. Like the original, the new film follows a group of teenagers — Madelyn Cline, Chase Sui Wonders, Sarah Pidgeon, Tyriq Withers, and Jonah Hauer-King — who are stalked by a mysterious stranger who knows  all about the awful mistake they made a year prior. But this time, the teens will at least have the guidance of Julie (Hewitt) and Ray (Prinze Jr.), who have lived through a similar tragedy.

Teasing where the upcoming film will find the two legacy characters, director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson previously told Entertainment Weekly, “Without giving too much away, they both moved through the trauma and became fully realized adults, and I think had very different ways of dealing with what happened to them. So that is definitely the main source of conflict between them: how do you move through this?”

She added that the reboot is ultimately about “both Ray and Julie finding catharsis through helping the younger cast in this film.”
