Dakota Johnson shared her hot take on the film industry while eating spicy chicken wings on Hot Ones.
Johnson appeared on the latest episode of the show to promote her new movie The Materialists. During the interview, Hot Ones host Sean Evans asked Johnson why Hollywood is so “risk-averse.”
“I think it’s hard when creative decisions are made by committee,” Johnson said. “And it’s hard when creative decisions are made by people who don’t even really watch movies or like know anything about them, and that tends to be what’s occurring a lot.”
Johnson added that studios tend to “remake the same things” when they see a certain project is performing well.
“Humans don’t want that,” Johnson said. “They want fresh. They want to feel new things, experience new things, see new things. So I don’t know, I guess it’s all just a bit of a mess right now, isn’t it?”

It’s been a popular trend in Hollywood in recent years to revive old shows and movies. While some people may be fatigued over all the recycling, industry insiders have shared a diverse array of opinions about reboots and remakes over the years.
Johnson has been outspoken about the difficulties of filmmaking in the current landscape. After her performance in 2024’s Madame Web became meme fuel online, she said that she “probably will never do anything like it again because I don’t make sense in that world.”
“Art does not do well when it’s made by committee,” she told Bustle last year. “Films are made by a filmmaker and a team of artists around them. You cannot make art based on numbers and algorithms.”
Johnson stars as the matchmaking protagonist Lucy in The Materialists, which is now in theaters. Watch the full episode of Hot Ones below.
