Bryan Cranston reminds Dana Carvey they were once costars in ‘Clean Slate’

Bryan Cranston just reminded Dana Carvey of a movie that the comedian wishes was wiped from his memory.

On the latest episode of Carvey and David Spade’s Fly on the Wall podcast, Cranston noted that he and Carvey were costars on the panned 1994 comedy Clean Slate.

In Clean Slate, Carvey plays a detective who has amnesia and has his memory scrubbed every night after he falls asleep. Cranston had a minor role as “Club Official” in the film.

“Whoa, you were in that?” Carvey asked Cranston. “That’s probably your lowest-grossing movie. I’m so sorry. If I could write you a check… I’m gonna do a Venmo.”

Cranston said he didn’t remember much about making the movie, which Carvey said was “terrible.”

“That was me making a foolish choice right off of SNL,” Carvey said. “I had way too much heat, no experience, and I wish I could take it back. If we could have switched in that you became the lead and I was Guard Number One, it might have had a chance.”

Clearly, the two actors have moved on to more successful projects in the following years, with Cranston winning multiple Emmys for his role as Walter White on the hit show Breaking Bad.

Meanwhile, Carvey has ventured into doing more voice-acting work in recent years, featuring in popular animated movies like The Secret Life of Pets. The Saturday Night Live alum also appeared regularly on the sketch comedy’s 50th season, playing Joe Biden, Elon Musk, and even Jennifer Coolidge.

Cranston noted that Clean Slate was written by Robert King who, in addition to penning commercial flops like Clean Slate and Cutthroat Island, co-created the popular legal dramas The Good Wife and The Good Fight.

“I’ve worked with him since [Clean Slate],” Cranston said. “I was partners with him on a series called Your Honor, and he’s terrific.”
